The Medicare Rights Center (www.medicarerights.org) is a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that people with Medicare get affordable health care through direct services, education, and advocacy initiatives. Medicare Rights is the largest independent source of Medicare information in the United States.
The Advocacy Coordinator Position
Medicare Rights currently seeks an Advocacy Coordinator to take charge of the organization's efforts to build and mobilize a nationwide network of people with Medicare, their caregivers, and the professionals serving them, to protect, improve, and expand Medicare, the country's most successful health insurance program. The Advocacy Coordinator will be part of the Medicare Rights Center's Policy and Communications Department and will work out of its Washington, DC, office. The position is available immediately, and applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
Specific responsibilities of the Advocacy Coordinator include:
- Drafting correspondence and testimony that clearly articulate Medicare Rights' and partners' positions to policymakers;
- Networking with and documenting interactions with a range of consumer-serving organizations and advocacy groups;
- Proactively reaching out to consumers, caregivers, and professionals in targeted states and nationally to evaluate the on-the-ground impact of health care policies and help forge campaigns to pursue targeted reforms;
- Contributing content to Medicare Rights' newsletters and web sites;
- Researching Medicare rules and regulations and coordinating activities with two other staff members in the DC office;
- Regularly corresponding with and occasionally traveling to Medicare Rights' New York office, and helping bridge New York-based direct services and DC-based policy work.
Qualifications
Versatility is a must. This position requires excellent writing, communication, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills. Proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint required. Previous organizing experience in an advocacy or political campaign and some background in health preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish candidates preferred.
