Volunteer Opportunities
Seniors Out Speaking on Medicare (SOS Medicare) Volunteers
Volunteers in the Seniors Out Speaking on Medicare (SOS Medicare) program visit senior centers, religious institutions, public housing projects, clubs and other sites throughout Westchester County and New York City. At each visit, they present a "Medicare Minute," a short lecture about an important health care topic, and provide Medicare counseling.
SOS Medicare volunteers in Westchester County, New York, can also help people with Medicare through other Westchester-based programs.
An SOS Medicare Volunteer:
- Visits a specific senior or community center each month;
- Educates consumers about Medicare through the �Medicare Minute,� a short, scripted presentation about a Medicare topic;
- Answers general questions about Medicare when possible.
Qualifications
- Comfortable with public speaking
- Compassionate, empathetic and patient
- Willing to learn and grow
- Medicare experience is NOT required. We will train you!
Time commitment
- Two to three hours per month;
- Attend a comprehensive training on Medicare;
- Attend monthly SOS meetings.

- Monday through Friday
- Choose one day a month that works well for you and for the people at your site
Supports—We support you every step of the way!
- Training: Excellent, comprehensive training to prepare you;
- Monthly meetings: At each meeting, you will receive a scripted �Medicare Minute� to present at your site. Meetings will also keep you informed about Medicare changes;
- Referrals to our hotlines and services: You aren�t expected to be the authority on all Medicare issues. You can refer people to our hotlines for expert counseling about their questions and problems;
- Ongoing individual support: You will receive individualized support whenever it is needed.
