Our Story

The purpose of this website is to raise awareness for the Bhumethan Community Health Centre. The construction of the centre, the employment of staff, and the provision of medical supplies rely on donations.

The Bhumethan Community Health Centre is located in the village of Gaushwora, which is a central village of Bhumethan situated on the north-west border of the Ramechhap district.  The closest health posts are in the villages of Doramba (4-5 hours walk) and Gunsi (6 hours walk), with the nearest Primary Health Care Centre in Manthali (14 hours walk).  The district’s only hospital is located in the district capital (18 hours walk).

A recent survey commissioned by the United Nations in the Ramechhap district found that the main health problems suffered are treatable with basic health care.  These include diarrhoea, respiratory infections, eye infections and nutritional deficiencies (see United Nations Nepal Information Platform).

The project began in 2007 to provide basic health care and information to villagers in Gaushwora, Lakhanpur and Thokarpur. Local residents in Gaushwora, the Bahadur Magar family, donated a parcel of land to the project. At the time of writing, the construction of the centre is nearing completion. Hira Bahadur Magar is overseeing the project. By October 2008, the project aims to employ a local community health worker full time and a visiting doctor once a fortnight to provide the health care to the local people.
